Camille Souter

Frank Morris

Opens 19 October 3.30pm, runs until 1 December 2019

Custom House Studios at Westport Quay, with Westival 2019, are pleased to host an exhibition of Camille Souter’s paintings along with a selection of sculptures by Frank Morris.  The exhibition will open on 19 October 2019 at 3.00pm,  in conjunction with Westival 2019, and will run every day until 1st December 2019.

Camille Souter is one of Ireland’s most accomplished and successful painters. She lives on Achill Island. She first visited Achill in 1959 and has been painting it ever since. No other Irish painter has made such a sustained contribution to the visual arts in Ireland over a period of 64 years.  Exhibition is curated by Garrett Cormican.

Garrett Cormican is a painter, friend of the artist and author of the largest study of Camille Souter’s work titled “Camille Souter, The Mirror in the Sea”. This included a catalogue of more than 500 works by her and over 300 photographs.   Exhibitions of Camille Souter’s paintings are rare. Garrett Cormican has been involved in the last two (in 1999 and 2001). Using his extensive experience with private collectors, Garrett Cormican will bring together a representative example of Camille Souter’s work.

Camille Souter’s late husband Frank Morris was a sculptor, working almost exclusively with wood. The last exhibition of his work was in 1980 in the Taylor Galleries. Souter and Morris were both chosen to show a large number of works in the first Independent Artists exhibition. Morris’s work is not nearly as well known as it should be, in Ireland, partly because he died at a young age but also because historically people have been slower to collect sculpture. This exhibition includes five sculptures by Frank Morris.

Camille Souter is an inspiration and an example to generations of Irish painters. She is also immensely popular with the public. She is a founding member of and a Saoi of Aosdána, President Mary McAleese described her:

“Camille stands out, among artists she stands out, a towering figure in Irish painting, a good and noble human being. So very worthy of the title 'saoi”. Camille Souter has gained wide recognition for her painting and has many awards and honours. There is likely to be enormous interest in this exhibition.
