Custom House Studios are pleased to “Up Close, and Far Away” By  Mariana Duarte Santos Custom House Studios Gallery, The Quay, Westport, Co. Mayo, opening Thursday August 1st at 7.00pm.  Exhibition runs every day until August 25th 2019. Exhibition runs every day until August 25th 2019.

"Up Close, and Far Away"  The works in this series of linocut prints “Up Close, and Far Away”, are based on still frames from 50s and 60s TV shows like "The Twilight Zone", "Hitchcock Presents”, “The Hitchcock Hour”, "Tales of Tomorrow" and “The Outer Limits”. In them, I attempt to renew or reanimate the old and poignant images that I see as still worthy of life by isolating them and presenting them in a new way. I chose images from TV shows as opposed to movies because I did not want the actors to be immediately identifiable; I wanted the beauty of the images themselves as opposed to simply a portrait of a “celebrity”.  From the beginning of the technological age and with the invention of video, countless numbers of images are created and simultaneously lost. In this series I sought to recreate these images using one of the lengthiest and most time consuming art techniques – engraving, in that aspect, the antitheses of video but like video, a work that can be multiplied (each linocut is part of an edition of 3-10 prints).  In technical terms, the linocuts grew in size as the series progressed (getting thus closer to the big screen), the last one so far measures 140x170cm (55x67 inches) and was printed using a steamroller! (there are no printing presses that big readily available).

Mariana Duarte Santos was born in 1995 in Lisbon, Portugal. She attended Escola Secundária Artística António Arroio, an arts specialized high school in Lisbon from which she graduated in 2013 with a major in ceramics. During her time in this school she took part in 3 group exhibitions (at the National Tile Museum, the National Museum of Contemporary Art and at Palácio Galveias). After high school, Mariana continued to develop her own personal work, mainly paintings, drawings and engravings focused mostly on people, culture, literature, history and very much inspired by cinema.   She started the first year of the Sculpture Degree at Faculdade de Belas Artes Universidade de Lisboa but after a year decided to enroll in the Drawing and Painting Degree at Ar.Co (also in Lisbon), after that she took the Advanced Course in Visual Arts and completed an Individual Printmaking Project.  She has participated in a number of group exhibitions both in Portugal and abroad – Spain, Ireland, U.K. and U.S.A. In 2015/2016 she collaborated with Irish poet Gerry Brennan to create a book of illustrated poetry “Light and Shade”, that consists of 37 poems and 40 drawings based on said poems, which was published by a small American publisher based in New York and was also published in a translated version by a Portuguese publisher.  Mariana is currently based in Lisbon where she has her studio and continues to explore different ideas and mediums, her favorites being: pen and watercolors, printmaking and oil painting.
